The Real 8to5 Story

In 2004 the 8to5 canister type energy saver was introduced by Mr Penny Wong original proprietor of www. 8to5 lighting.com (no longer available). The advantages of this design included low mass of raw materials needed and easy packaging and transportation of high numbers.

The distinct rounded square shape of the 8to5 canister had a major disadvantage, it would not fit many of the standard multiple lamp (3 or 4 tubes) luminaires.

The shape was redesigned to a cylindrical shape so it would fit a majority of luminaires; however the reduction of internal volume created further over-heating problems because components needed to be mounted much closer together.

A further 8to5 canister redesign included vents to the side of the cylinder to aid component cooling during operation.

Unfortunately, particularly in United Kingdom, this 8to5 canister unit would still not fit many of the common multiple lamp luminaires.

Installation was hazardous requiring both end of the 8to5 canister units to be held and twisted in perfect synchronous direction. It was soon realised that the replacement of the T5 tube when it reached the end of its efficient life would be equally hazardous and possibly dangerous if done by someone not properly trained.

The 8to5 canister design was abandoned in 2005 and replaced with the 8to5 rail design which utilized a standard T5 ballast rail giving the product a rigid one piece structure, easy to install end fittings, far superior component cooling during operation.

The 8to5 was finally redesigned in 2006 by Clive Wing to eliminate the need for starter replacement, at same time an integral fire safety fuse was added to the main circuit board creating the adapT5 design as used from 2007.
